Sabbatilog 2.0 | Part 16 | Side Quest 1

In addition to doing things focused on faith and art during my sabbatical, I am also enjoying some other activities I am calling "side quests." Some of these are annual summer events, while others are things that have been on my wish list for awhile.

Last night I was able to travel to the Ohio Theatre in Columbus for CAPA's summer movie series. I have attended a number of times in summer past. Each year there are classic movies shown throughout the summer. There is usually a "Friday Night with Fritz" event with Fritz the Nite Owl. You can read about my visit with Fritz here. There is also usually a silent film presentation with organist Clark Wilson. Mr. Wilson plays the "Mighty Morton" organ throughout the entire film. He doesn't play from a score, but rather notes and cues in the tradition of silent film accompanists from years past. His notes from last night's performance consisted of five and a half pages.

The silent film this year was My Best Girl. Here's the description from the website: America's Sweetheart Mary Pickford met her real-life husband Buddy Rogers when they starred together in My Best Girl, the charming tale of a work romance between stock girl Maggie Johnson and stock-boy-turned manager, Joe Grant. What Maggie doesn't know is Joe is actually Joseph Merrill, the store owner's son, who is trying to prove he can get along without his father's help. Also complicating their budding relationship is Maggie's chaotic family, including a sister who is finding trouble with her bad news boyfriend and an overdramatic mother. There is also the small matter of Joe's arranged marriage that he doesn't actually know about yet. All of the problems collide on one eventful night, and the young lovers are tested once more before they can finally said off for romance."

The film was very funny and if you haven't seen a silent film with live organ, you are missing out.

Other movies I have seen with Clark Wilson:

2024 CAPA Series: The Mark of Zorro (1920)

2021 CAPA Series; The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923)

2018 CAPA Series: "Laurel and Hardy Laugh-a-thon" (1927-1928)

2015 at St John's Lutheran: The King of Kings (1927)

I was planning to go in 2025 to see Safety Last! (1923), but the film was replaced with Titanic due to Clark Wilson's health.
